April 12, 2018 /  April Concert Series will feature VU Music students and guests

VINCENNES, Ind. - An April Concert Series presented by the Vincennes University Department of Music will showcase talented students performing in a variety of vocal and instrumental ensembles, including the Brass Ensemble, Woodwind Ensemble, Concert Band, VU Connection, Jazz Ensemble, Blues Ensemble, and String Ensemble.

Concerts include “An Evening of Winds and Percussion” on April 18, “A Disney Cabaret” on April 22, “Jazz on the Wabash on April 24, and “Guitar Fest on April 26. Admission for all concerts is free and the public is cordially invited to attend.

“An Evening of Winds and Percussion” on April 18 will feature a wide variety of traditional and contemporary wind literature , beginning at 7:30 p.m. (EDT), at VU’s Red Skelton Performing Arts Center. The evening will showcase the Brass Ensemble, under the direction of Wade Baker; the Woodwind Ensemble, under the direction of Tom Wilson; and the Concert Band, under the direction of Susie Jackson.

Moving to Jefferson Union on April 22 at 4 p.m., “A Disney Cabaret” will feature the Concert Choir and the VU Connection. The students have worked diligently to create a cohesive choir and unified sound and look forward to presenting a fun and exciting show for all audiences. Musical selections will include show tunes and songs from Disney movies, musicals, and television programs.  The choirs are under the direction of Juliet Gilchrist, VU instructor of music.

Featured performer Randy Villars, professional jazz pianist and saxophonist, will join three VU performing ensembles for an evening of “Jazz on the Wabash,” April 24, 7:30 p.m., at the Skelton Center. The performance will showcase the VU Connection and the Concert Choir, under the direction of Juliet Gilchrist, and the Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Wade Baker. 

The Series will conclude with “Guitar Fest” on April 26, 7:30 p.m., at the Skelton Center. The concert will include feature the Blues Ensemble and String Ensemble as well as VU students, Music Department Faculty, special guests Evan Twitty and his band, Wire and Wood, and additional guest artists.

The VU Music program is designed to allow students to complete the first two years of a baccalaureate degree in music, with studies available in music education, performance, theory and composition, therapy, business and industry, or church music. 

The curriculum includes two years of music theory, ear training and aural skills, piano, and applied lessons, as well as opportunities to perform in a variety of vocal and instrumental ensembles.
