VINCENNES, Ind. - David R. Murtaugh, executive director of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, has been invited to speak with students enrolled in Vincennes University’s Law Enforcement and Conservation Law Enforcement programs on Dec. 7.
Murtaugh is a distinguished VU graduate who earned his associate degree in Law Enforcement from Vincennes University in 1976. He was appointed to his current position in 2015 by Indiana Governor Michael R. Pence and was reappointed in 2016 by Indiana Governor Eric J. Holcomb.
“I grew up in Tippecanoe County and have known Dave Murtaugh most of my life. He is one of the reasons I chose to attend VU in 1979,” said Bill Gollmitzer, VU assistant professor of Law Enforcement. “In my opinion, Dave Murtaugh is among our program’s most distinguished alumni and I’m excited that he is taking the time to speak to our students and faculty.” Gollmitzer graduated from the VU Law Enforcement program in 1981.
A lifelong public servant - serving many of his years in public safety - Murtaugh served eight years as United States Marshal after being nominated by President George W. Bush in 2001. During his tenure there he also served as Acting Deputy Director for State, Local, and Tribal Affairs in the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. Murtaugh began his career at the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office where he moved up the ranks as a patrolman, sergeant, lieutenant, captain/commander of the Enforcement Division, and eventually serving two terms as Sheriff.

Murtaugh has been a lifelong public servant - serving many of his years in public safety. He served eight years as a United States Marshal with the United States Marshals Services, after being nominated by President George W. Bush in December 2001 and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in February 2002. During his tenure there he also served as Acting Deputy Director for State, Local, and Tribal Affairs in the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. Murtaugh began his career at the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office, where he moved up the ranks, serving as patrolman, sergeant, lieutenant, captain/commander of the Enforcement Division, and eventually serving two terms as Sheriff.
Prior to his current role, Director Murtaugh served in the Office of United States Senator Dan Coats, first as Regional Director for Northwest Indiana, then as Senior Advisor.
Murtaugh earned his associate degree in Law Enforcement from Vincennes University in 1976. He later earned his bachelor’s degree from Indiana University Northwest. Murtaugh also graduated from the FBI National Academy, 165th Session.
