VINCENNES, Ind. - Evelyn Crowley, 18, was selected Miss Vincennes University 2018 at the Miss VU Scholarship Pageant on Nov. 10 at the Red Skelton Performing Arts Center. WVUT will rebroadcast the Miss VU Scholarship Pageant on Nov. 18 at 8 p.m. EST.
A graduate of Vincennes Lincoln High School, Crowley is a pre-medicine major at VU. For her talent presentation in the pageant she sang “Not for the Life of Me.” Her platform is “Not All Drama is Bad.” She is the daughter of Kelley and John McCarty, Vincennes, and Mark Crowley, Vincennes.
First runner-up was Hannah Poynter, Danville, who is a broadcasting major at VU. While being homeschooled, she was actively involved with theatre and dance and was also a semi-finalist for the National Security Language Initiative for Youth. Her overall goal after graduation is to work for Paramount Pictures Entertainment. She is involved with the VU Communications Club and volunteers with Helping His Hands. Her parents are Jeff and Sonia Poynter of Danville.
Second runner-up was Anastasia Sharp-Keller, Vincennes, is a behavioral sciences major with a concentration in psychology. She’s a Vincennes Lincoln High School graduate and volunteers at Clothe a Kid: Help Them Live and the Lions Club. Anastasia serves as an Admissions Tour Guide and an assistant to External Relations at VU. She is the daughter of Jason and Christy Keller of Vincennes.
Third runner-up was Miranda Toler, Frankfort, is a personal trainer major at VU. She’s a graduate of Frankfort High School where she was an honors student, earned her cosmetology license, and earned a certificate in auto technology. She is the daughter of Sandy and David Toler of Frankfort.
Fourth runner-up was Samantha Haynes, Crown Point, is a psychology major at VU where she is a member of College Republicans. She is actively involved in Turning Point USA and travels the nation to attend conferences. She is the daughter of Laura and Arthur Haynes and Jacquelyn and Jeff Chicki of Crown Point.
Additional contestants included Abbigail Banks, Springville, fashion merchandising; Diana Coffman, Vincennes, aerospace engineering; Haylee Green, Vincennes, elementary/special education; Constance Greer, Indianapolis, business management; Christina Hicks, Freelandville, fire science; and Shiana Yarrito, Washington, Diesel Technology.
Indiana’s longest consecutively running pageant, which celebrated its 52nd anniversary this year, the Miss VU Scholarship Pageant is a preliminary step toward the Miss Indiana title whose winner is then eligible to participate in the Miss America Scholarship Pageant. In addition to the contestants, 40 VU students are involved in this year’s production.
Each of the 11 semi-finalists participated in five areas of competition: private interview conducted prior to the pageant, on-stage question, lifestyle and fitness in swimsuit, eveningwear, and talent. In addition, each presented information about her platform - a socially significant issue or cause on which she works to raise public awareness.
Joining the Miss VU contestants on stage was Miss VU 2017 Ashley Green and 25 Miss VU Princesses, ranging in age from 6 to 11 years. Emcees for the event were VU students Corbin Barrasas, Hobart, and Holly Bittner, Haubstadt, who is the reigning Miss Gibson County.
Among the performers was Miss Indiana Haley Begay, Pittsboro, who sang “For Good” from the musical “Wicked.”
