February 22, 2019 / Joint concert will feature VU and area performers
VINCENNES, Ind. - Selections from Brahms’ “A German
Requiem,” will be performed March 3, 4 p.m. (EST), at VU’s Red
Skelton Performing Arts Center. The concert is free and the public is
invited to attend.
The performance will feature a combined ensemble of Vincennes
University choirs, local high school students, and community singers,
with a chamber orchestra, all under the direction of VU Juliet
Gilchrist, choral director.
Brahms composed the Requiem in reaction to his grief over his
mother’s death in February 1865. He assembled the libretto himself. In
contrast to the Latin requiem, he used text from the Bible, focusing
on the living rather than the dead. The Requiem begins with the text
“Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted,” derived
directly from the Beatitudes. This theme of comfort for the living
continues throughout the work.
