February 9, 2019 / Lady 'Blazers continue winnings ways 


VINCENNES, Ind. – Five freshmen reached double figures as the Vincennes University women's basketball team won 97-50 over Region 24 opponent Kaskaskia on Saturday.

Kaskaskia matched the Trailblazers' offensive pace in the early stages of the game resulting in a one-point Blue Angel lead after the first quarter, after the lead changed eight times in the first 10 minutes of action inside the P.E. Complex. VU used a 22-2 run early in the second quarter to spring the Lady Blazers to a 20-point lead, which gave the Lady Blazers a 47-29 advantage at the break.

Freshman Fess Hawkins did the bulk of the Trailblazers’ scoring in the first half, going into the locker room with 16 points and 6 rebounds.

VU continued to expand its lead in the second-half, only yielding 21 points in the final two periods of play.

Hawkins finished the game as the Lady Blazers leading scorer with 23 points on 11 of 13 shooting while grabbing 9 rebounds. Jhala Henry and Jaynice Stovall finished the game with 12 and 11 points respectively, with Stovall dishing out 7 assists and swiping 3 steals. Reeva Hammelman and Jocelyn Thompson round out the Blazers scorers with double figures with 11 and 10. Hammelman filled every column of the box score with 3 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals, while Thompson came off the bench to add an extra scoring spark to propel the Lady Blazers to their third straight victory, with the smallest margin being a 46-point win over Rend Lake this past Wednesday.

VU improves to 16-6 on the season. Kaskaskia, which only had six players active, drops to 5-18.

VU returns to the floor this Wednesday as it faces off with rival Lincoln Trail. Tip-off is at 5 p.m. EST with the men’s game to follow.
