January 18, 2018 / Old Post Bluegrass Jam is Feb. 11 at VU

VINCENNES, Ind. - The 18th Annual Old Post Bluegrass Jam will be Feb. 11, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (EST), at Vincennes University’s Jefferson Union, 1379 N. Chestnut Street. Admission is free.

In addition to jams throughout the building, there will be an open stage featuring bands Mariah Creek at 12 noon, Reigel Family Band at 1 p.m., and Lost River Risin at 2 p.m.

“About this time every year, excitement for this event begins to build in the bluegrass community,” said Raymond Hatton, one of the Jam’s organizers and a member of the band Mariah Creek. “I start getting phone calls and emails asking about the Old Post Jam. Of course, we owe a debt of gratitude to Bill Stedman and Louis Marchino for getting this going years ago.”

The Jefferson Union is located next to VU’s P.E. Complex, with free parking nearby at the Chestnut Street parking lot. Persons may enter Jefferson Union directly from a sidewalk on the south side of the building, adjacent to the Updike Center, or enter the P.E. Complex and proceed to an entrance at the end of the hallway.

“One thing that has helped the popularity of the Jam is the move to VU in 2008. We started out at Kimmel Park at the Boat Club and then moved to a hotel for several years, but the VU facilities are perfect for us, thanks to the coffee house atmosphere and food and beverage options people enjoy while sitting around, talking, and listening to bluegrass,” Hatton said.

There have been as many as ten different jam sessions going on simultaneously during the event in past years. Musicians form jams just about everywhere. Persons are encouraged to pull up a chair any place a jam session forms. Experienced musicians also welcome the less experienced to join in the fun.
