VINCENNES, Ind. - Vincennes University Broadcasting’s Blazer 91.1 WVUB has been recognized by the Indiana Broadcasters Association with an IBA Cardinal Community Service Award for its impact in and around Vincennes. Cardinal Service awards were presented to broadcasters in all of Indiana’s nine Congressional Districts. WVUB received the award in August during a luncheon hosted by the IBA at the Tropicana Hotel in Evansville.
WVUB was recognized for its outstanding community impact through the annual Shopping Cart Showdown. Held each January, the event helps restock the shelves of the local food pantries at a time when they have been depleted during the busy holiday season.
In the spirit of the game show Super Market Sweep, representatives from three local corporate sponsors ‘speed shop’ for the nonprofit organization of their choice. All of the food collected during the 91-second game is donated to that individual’s nonprofit and the winning shopper receives a miniature shopping cart as a trophy.
In the event’s first two years more than $2,400 in groceries were donated. Groups that have benefitted from the event are St. Vincent De Paul, Loaves and Fishes, and Helping His Hands. The event has become a staple of WVUB’s Season of Sharing promotion that encourages charitable giving and acts of service from mid-November through mid-January.
“We love the Blazer 91.1 WVUB because we don’t have to reach out to them, they reach out to us,” said Helping His Hands Director Scott Shipman.
