May 1, 2018 / Students relate social issues through art

VINCENNES, Ind. - Vincennes University Graphic Design majors spent the month of April preparing works for their upcoming exhibition, “It’s Never Too Late - Sexual Assault/Abuse Awareness,” which opens May 4 at The Open Gallery, 329 Main Street. The opening will coincide with the city’s “First Friday Art Walk” held downtown from 5-8 p.m. (EDT).

The works were created as part of the VU Art and Design Department’s annual Student Poster Art project which features the works of senior Graphic Design students under the direction of Pravin Sevak, associate professor of art.

“It’s Never Too Late - Sexual Assault/Abuse Awareness” was chosen as the project theme in an effort to engage students in a topic that has relevance and meaning in current culture. For context, students heard presentations by Dena Held, director of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), and Kathy Evans, VU Counseling Services.

Throughout the month of April, which is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, students researched and studied the devastation and tragedy of assault and abuse.  Their posters demonstrate the often unrelenting heartaches that can overwhelm victims and their families, but they also reveal the resilience of the human spirit and its ability to heal.

"FIRST FRIDAY" ART WALK

Held on the first Friday of each month from 5-8 p.m. (EDT), three downtown galleries offer changing exhibitions featuring works to view and purchase. Featured galleries include the Art Space Gallery, The Open Gallery, and the Northwest Territory Art Guild.
