November 6, 2018 / VU Trailblazer bowlers finish in top 10
MARIETTA, Ga. - The Vincennes University Bowling team came away
with a top 10 finish over the weekend at the Brunswick Southern Classic.
The event marked the second Tier 1 tournament of the season for
VU and the Trailblazers finished 10th in the field of 30.
According to VU coach Jesse Gibson, the Trailblazers started
off slow on Saturday before making a charge up the team standings by
the end of the first day.
“We were battling the lane conditions, but by the end of the
day we started to click and had moved up nine spots and into eighth
place,” Gibson said.
Much of the same occurred on Sunday during the 24 baker games.
“Day two saw the same struggle with making the right shots for
the condition they were on,” Gibson stated. “I would describe the day
as being a roller coaster as the players put together many great games
while lacking some execution in others which ultimately made it harder
to make up the pins to raise the team in the standings.”
Tyler Perry finished as the top individual for the Trailblazers
with a third-place finish. Perry finished the tournament with a 6-game
average of 222.6 as he was named to his fourth all-tournament team of
the season.
“Tyler continued to be a topic of discussion,” Gibson said.
For the season, Perry leads all of college bowling with a
221.86 average over 22 games. His average is three pins better than
his closest competition.
Hunter Stevens fell just 12 pins shy of joining Perry on the
all-tournament team. The sophomore finished with a 217.5 average which
was good for sixth place.
Other VU bowlers included: Joshua Taylor (196.3), Tyler Lewis
(187.4) Connor Hickey (179), Isaac Wake (157) and Keaton Green (139).
“While the team did not finish where they would have liked, I
still saw key areas many of them work on being put into play which is
crucial both in terms of trusting the process and gaining confidence
in what they are doing,” the VU coach explained. “While there is still
much work to be done in the spare shooting department, I am confident
this team has the ability to compete toe-to-toe with any team out there.”
The Trailblazers return to the lanes at the Leatherneck Classic
in Moline, IL on Saturday and Sunday.
