Automation and Robotics (AR) Academy
A Patoka Valley Career and Technical Education Cooperative Program in partnership with Vincennes University Jasper.
In the fall of 2017, the four Dubois County school corporations began a rigorous grant process called the Ready Schools Initiative. A series of listening sessions were conducted gathering 2,000 suggestions through 400 interviews and 58 meetings with industry leaders, educators, parents and students. This feedback was synthesized into five strategies, including the item below:
Collaborate with Vincennes University Jasper (VUJ), the four county school corporations, and the Patoka Valley CTE Cooperative to build a strong Advanced Manufacturing pathway and establish an Automation and Robotics (AR) Academy housed in the VUJ CTIM building.
The Automation and Robotics (AR) Academy is available to all high school students within the Patoka Valley CTE Cooperative and will follow the outline below:
AR Academy labs will be hosted at the VUJ CTIM building
Participants in the program will attend the Academy each day from 1:15-3:00.
Each week students will participate in 3 days of labs at the VUJ CTIM, and 2 days per week in an internship
Students will receive both high school and college credit for their work. Year one courses will include:
Indiana DOE CTE Code- Industrial Automation and Robotics 1 (5610)
CIMT 201- Concepts of Fluid Power for Industrial Maintenance
Introduction to the theory and operation of fluid power systems. This course will cover fluid power components, circuit diagrams, circuit operation, basic fluid power principles, and properties.
CIMT 202- Concepts of PLC
This course covers the operation and programming of a programmable logic controller (PLC). Laboratory experiences include creating ladder logic programs and using them to troubleshoot automation equipment.
CIMT 220- Concepts and Applications in Industrial Automation
This course covers an introduction to Computer Integrated Manufacturing in industry. Programming concepts are introduced using Visual Basic. Emphasis is placed on robotic workcell basics; including programming a robot. Various topics cover robotic classifications, applications, socioeconomic impact, workcell design, robot programming, sensor and actuator interfacing, plus a project centered on a CIM workcell.
Student will earn $8/ hour while working in an internship
Academy participants will be assigned to a new internship location each semester
Internship experience should give participants exposure to a wide variety of career pathways available with the employer while also developing skills of the participant and providing real-life work experience
