Mary Lukens (L.) Coxon Memorial Scholarship
A new Vincennes University scholarship honoring the life and legacy of Mary Lukens Coxon, the Mary Lukens (L.) Coxon Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to students pursuing a degree with the purpose of improving the welfare of children. Mary Lukens grew up in rural Martin County, Indiana. She had a love and a passion for children and coupled with her love of learning led her to pursue a degree in teaching. Following her time at VU she attended Indiana University, Purdue and received her Ed.D from the University of Arizona. Her family shared that “She was a teacher, professor and a child psychologist as well as an extraordinary wife, mother and grandmother. She believed that the power of education changes lives and has stated that had it not been for her opportunity to attend VU she probably would not have been able to move forward with her dream.” VU offers a variety of programs that focus on youth including the Special Education, Mild Intervention K-12 baccalaureate degree and associate degrees in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Child Development, Psychology and Social Work. Cynthia Ragle, Dean of Social Science, Performing Arts and Communication stated, “We are pleased to award the Mary L. Coxon Scholarship and assist students pursue their educational goals. This scholarship complements the core part of VU’s mission to develop individuals and enhance communities.” The family of Mary L.
